Northern California | Fall & Winter Steelhead

Jason Hartwick & Steelhead on the Spey

Revered for their historic runs of wild fall and winter steelhead, California’s North Coast rivers are legendary. Flyfishing for steelhead began on the banks of the Eel River in the late 1800’s. The Eel once hosted runs of salmon and steelhead that were among the largest in the entire Pacific Northwest. Today, rivers such as the Eel, South Fork Eel, Van Duzen, Smith, Mad, Klamath, and lower Trinity, to name a few, continue to host fishable returns of wild steelhead. • • • The region promises not only excellent steelheading, but offers amazing scenery. Many of California’s North Coast rivers flow through groves of ancient, old-growth redwoods, the tallest and some of the oldest living things on Earth. This is the land of big trees, Bigfoot and big fish!

Description: Steelhead on the Spey provides guided and instructional day trips for steelhead and salmon on California’s North Coast using two-handed rods, targeting the most aggressive fish with the traditional down and across, swung fly method. In the summer and fall months steelhead on the Klamath and Trinity Rivers are in play. In the winter months, wild steelhead on North Coast rivers such as the Eel, Smith and Van Duzen are the focus. Weather and water conditions determine the best method of locating steelhead, therefore a day’s fishing may include floating miles of river in a comfortable self-bailing raft, jet boating, or walking into some of the best runs in Northern California.
