A trip to Estancia Laguna Verde in the Santa Cruz state of Argentina provides a glimpse of the old American West. The landscape is harsh and often windy, with few indications of civilization. What makes it unique to the angler is the unbelievably large trout to be found in mind-boggling numbers in Strobel (aka Jurassic) Lake and its feeder Rio Barrancoso. Literally, there are more fish OVER six pounds in the lake, than under, and a legitimate shot at fish topping twenty pounds is an everyday possibility. These are no fat, hatchery-reared slugs. These rainbows, many resembling ocean-phase steelhead, reproduce naturally in the Barrancoso, are bull-strong and often acrobatic. And they’re very aggressive to the fly! • • • The lodge is a modest ranchhouse befitting the location, yet well-appointed with all necessary comforts. ELV takes great pride in the quality of its daily cuisine; the food is wonderful, and always accompanied by superb Argentine wines. Guides are well versed in the nuances of fishing the lake and a pleasure to spend a day on the water. • • • The perfect add-on to a week on the Rio Grande or Rio Santa Cruz.
